What Does Monoï Smell Like?
Monoï smells of warm coconut and tiare, the white Tahitian gardenia: sweet, creamy and softly floral, closer to sun-warmed skin than to perfume. Pure monoï is gentle and fades within a few hours. Many monoï body oils, including ours, add a fragrance on top, so they smell richer and more layered than monoï on its own.

What pure monoï smells like
Monoï is coconut oil with tiare flowers steeped in it, so its scent is the two together.
- The coconut is soft and creamy, more like coconut flesh than a coconut-flavored candy.
- The tiare is a white floral: sweet and warm, with less of the heady intensity of a garden gardenia.
Together they smell the way people often describe French Polynesia: warm, clean and a little sweet. It's a soft scent. On skin it sits close, and most people notice it most just after applying it.
Why monoï body oils smell different from each other
Two monoï products can smell nothing alike. There are three reasons:
- How much monoï is in it. A pure monoï is almost all coconut and tiare. A blend may contain a little monoï among other oils.
- Whether fragrance is added. Many monoï oils add a perfume on top. Look for "parfum" or "fragrance" on the ingredient list.
- The other oils. Nut and seed oils have faint scents of their own, which soften or round out the monoï.
So if you're choosing by scent, smell it before you buy if you can, and read the ingredient list either way.
What our Tahitian Oil smells like
Tahitian Oil is made with monoï, and its fragrance was developed in Grasse, in the South of France. We built it around four ideas:
- Tiare: luminous white flowers, reminiscent of warm skin.
- Coconut: creamy and subtle, never sugary.
- Soft woods: dry and grounding, so it doesn't read as a beach-vacation cliché.
- Salt air: a hint of the coastline.
It isn't "beachy" in the coconut-sunscreen sense. It's meant to smell like the memory of a place you loved.

Does monoï clash with perfume?
It's soft enough that it usually sits underneath a perfume rather than competing with it. If you wear a strong perfume, apply the oil after your shower, give it a few minutes, then spray your perfume as usual. Florals, citrus and soft woods tend to sit most easily on top of it. For more ideas, see our guide to layering fragrance with Tahitian Oil.
Who monoï's scent isn't for
If you prefer unscented skincare, or fragrance is something your skin reacts to, a fragranced monoï body oil isn't the right choice. Tahitian Oil is fragranced; the full ingredient list is on the product page. If you're unsure, patch test on the inside of your arm for a day first.
The easiest way to know if you'll like it
Try it on your own skin, after a shower, for a few days. Scent changes with skin, and a bottle smelled in a shop is never quite the same as a scent worn. The 8ml Tahitian Oil mini ($15) is made for exactly that. The full Tahitian Oil is $62 for 1.69 fl oz / 50ml.
Questions about monoï's scent
What does monoï smell like?
Warm coconut and tiare flower: sweet, creamy and softly floral.
Does monoï smell like sunscreen?
Not really. Many sunscreens use a coconut-style fragrance, but monoï is softer and more floral, with the tiare in front.
How long does the scent of monoï last?
Pure monoï is subtle and fades within a few hours. A fragranced monoï body oil lasts longer, and lasts best on damp skin straight after a shower.
Is tiare the same smell as gardenia?
Close, but softer. Tiare is a gardenia species (Gardenia taitensis), creamier and less heady than the common garden gardenia. More in our post on what tiare is.
Can I wear monoï instead of perfume?
Many people do, especially in summer. It's softer than a perfume, so it reads as "you" rather than "perfume."
